Meanings Through this graphic, I tried to convey the message that your graduation is the beginning of your future. Your diploma represents a match to light your personal fuse that can explode into fireworks with your future endeavors. I am hoping this graphic conveys positivity for recent graduates. I interpreted this quote the way I did because I can relate to being a recent graduate in the process of “starting my fireworks”.
Processes 1. I started creating this graphic in Gimp by opening my fireworks picture. 2. Then, I also opened a picture of myself at my graduation. 3. I selected the Free Select Tool to select only myself in my graduation photo. 4. I selected Edit>Copy Visible in the graduation photo to copy myself. 5. I went to the fireworks picture and selected Edit>Paste to insert my graduation picture into the fireworks picture. 6. I selected the Move Tool to drag my graduation picture to the desired location. 7. I then selected the Text Tool and drew a text box where I wanted to type. 8. I typed my quote, changed the font size to 98, changed the font to Marker Felt Bold, and centered the text. I started off creating this image with an idea. I knew I was done when the image matched my idea and when I felt the image correctly portrayed the quote. I feel like my strength in this process was inserting text because I have done this in the web banner I created. My weakness was cropping myself out of my graduation photo and pasting it into the fireworks photo. Although I have done this before, it is something that I need practice and extra time with. The process of creating this graphic was similar to the process of writing because they both involve brainstorming, creativity, and interpretation.
Choices I came up with this idea by looking through my pictures for something to use as a good background image. I came across the picture of fireworks that I took this Fourth of July at Lake Murray. I searched the internet for quotations that included something about fireworks. That’s when I came across the quote by Edward Koch, “The fireworks begin today. Each diploma is a lighted match. Each one of you is a fuse.” I really liked the quote and could also relate to it. I thought of what other image I could use to help portray the quote, so I looked through my pictures from graduation. I came across one I liked and decided to use it. By inserting my graduation picture into the fireworks photo, I was hoping to achieve a smooth, natural look. I wanted it to look as if the fireworks were actually going off behind me on the night of graduation. I really enjoyed the creativity and freedom of this assignment!
